Cricket Career
Kieron Pollard’s childhood was a struggling phase. His mother raised him and his two sisters in a financially weak condition.
In 2006, Pollard represented West Indies in the U-19 World Cup. Pollard failed to gather more runs and wickets at the tournament. In 2006, Pollard’s senior debut for Trinidad and Tobago came up against the Cayman Islands in the Stanford Twenty20. He helped his side enter the finals with a blistering knock of 83* off 38 deliveries against Nevis.
Pollard had a dream run in first class cricket. He played such knocks where more than half of the runs were scored through boundaries.
Pollard was shocked and disappointed as he wasn’t selected for the West Indian side for ICC T20 World Cup 2007. Pollard finally played his maiden T20I in June 2008 against Australia.
In 2009, Pollard represented Trinidad and Tobago in the CLT20. He played a match winning knock against New South Wales.
The NSW management was so impressed that they tried to sign Pollard for them. “If you can’t beat them, buy them”.
Pollard was then signed by IPL franchise Mumbai Indians in 2010. With the maximum bid rule in action, a tie-breaker was held. MI defeated the likes of CSK, KKR and RCB in this tie-breaker. Dwayne Bravo, who was already a part of the Mumbai based franchise, recommended Pollard’s name to the management. Pollard proved his worth with time. His playoffs’ performances have been etched in MI fans’ memories. Though MI lost the finals, it was Kieron Pollard who brought a ray of hope for the Paltan.
In 2012, Pollard and Ambati Rayudu helped MI register a thrilling victory against the Royal Challengers Bangalore. MI lost 5 wickets with only 51 runs on board. With Pollard and Rayudu at the crease, MI chased down the total from 51 to 173 with no more loss of wickets. Pollard finished the season with 220 runs and 16 wickets to his name.
Pepsi IPL 2013 was a game changer for both Kieron Pollard and Mumbai Indians. Pollard scored career best 420 runs in 18 matches.
Pollard rescued MI in the final match after 3 early dismissals. He scored 60 runs off 32 deliveries, taking MI to a respectable total of 148 runs. Lasith Malinga and Mitchell Johnson provided MI with 3 early breakthroughs. Rest of MI’s bowlers capitalized on the situation. MI clinched the title by defeating CSK by 23 runs. In February 2022, Pollard toured India as the captain for the white ball teams. It turned out to be his last international series as he decided to quit all formats of international cricket later in April.
After a disappointing end to Mumbai Indians’ campaign in 2022, Kieron Pollard’s retention chances declined. With changes required in the line-up, Pollard decided to hang his boots. He said that he would never represent any other franchise in the IPL. Pollard replaced Robin Singh for the role of batting coach in Mumbai Indians.
