Cricket Career

Shimron Hetmyer had a cricketing environment from the very beginning as both his father and brother used to play cricket. He started his cricket journey from his school life where he was selected for his school team- Rose Hall Estate Primary School. From there onwards Hettie was focused and determined about his goal of playing for the national side. His dream became reality when he was selected as the captain of the world cup winning West Indies U-19 team in 2016 which was hosted by Bangladesh. He scored 2 half-centuries for his team in the whole tournament.

He made his T20 debut in the Caribbean Premier League for Guyana Amazon Warriors in the 2016 edition and because of his performance, he was retained for the 2017 edition as well.

In August 2018 he made a record of being the youngest-ever player to score a century in the CPL. He did this while playing for Guyana Amazon Warriors against Jamaica Tallawahs.

He was named in the test squad for West Indies for their series against Pakistan and made his international debut in tests on 21^st April 2017 in Sabina Park, Kingston, Jamaica. While batting at no.3 he scored a mere 11 runs from 20 deliveries including 2boundaries before getting bowled by Mohammad Amir in the first innings. In the second innings, he scored 20 runs in 28 deliveries including 2 boundaries and a six, and got out by Yasir Shah.

He was added to the One-day squad for West Indies in December 2017 for the series against New Zealand. He made his ODI debut on 20^th December 2017 against New Zealand in Cobham Oval (New), Whangarei. While batting at the no.4 position he scored 29 runs from 42 balls including 4 boundaries and then got out by Todd Astle. West Indies however lost that match by 5 wickets.

Hettie made his T20I debut on new year’s day that is on 1^st January 2018 against New Zealand in Mount Maunganui, New Zealand however the match was whitewashed due to rain. In his first ever T20I innings he scored just 7 runs of 3 deliveries including a six and got run out on 3^rd January 2018. In this match, Colin Munro scored a blistering 104 of 53 deliveries including 3 boundaries and 10 monstrous sixes. West Indies lost the match by a mammoth 119 runs.

In 2018 after a great performance in the series against India, Hetmyer was bought by Royal Challengers Bangalore in the 2018 IPL auction for 5 crore. It was a very tough season for him as he was not able to perform apart from the last match where he scored a half-century and a match-winning knock with Gurkeerat Singh Maan. However, he was released immediately in the next season and then he went to Delhi Capitals. Currently, he is playing for the Rajasthan Royals and is in the form of his life.

He scored his first ODI ton against UAE at the Old Hararians ground in Harare on 6^th March 2018 and was named the man of the match. This match was the 2018 World Cup Qualifier.

He was also named in the 2019 West Indies world cup squad. He was named in the 2022 West Indies T20I world cup squad as well but he was removed because he missed his flight on the way to Australia.
