Suryakumar Yadav Early Life and Education
Born in Mumbai on 14th September 1990, better known as Sky, is a right-handed batsman who plays for the Mumbai Indians in the world’s biggest cricket league – IPL.
Surya started playing cricket in the streets of Chembur, Mumbai. His father saw his determination and interest in the game and thus enrolled him in a cricket academy in the BARC colony in Anushakti Nagar. Later he enrolled in the former cricketer Dilip Vengsarkar’s cricket academy – ELF Vengsarkar. He studies at Pillai College of Arts, Commerce, and Science.

Debut: In 2021 Surya got his maiden T20I call-up from the national side. He was selected for the Indian team for a series against England. On 14th March Surya made his debut in the T20I. However, he didn’t get a chance to bat. He played his 2nd T20I on 18th March and got the opportunity to bat for the first time wearing an Indian jersey. Surya scored 56 of 31 balls including 6 fours and 3 sixes.
Best Innings:
- One of his best T20I knocks came in 2022 when he scored his maiden century against England at Trent Bridge in Nottingham. He scored 117 runs off just 55 runs.
- Later in June 2021, he was named to the ODI squad for the first time for a series against Sri Lanka. He made his debut in the ODI format on 18 July 2021. He scored 31 runs from 20 balls including 5 boundaries on this occasion.

Suryakumar Yadav Cricket Career and Stats
The world no.1 started playing cricket in the streets of Chembur, Mumbai under the guidance of his uncle Vinod Yadav. His father supported him throughout and soon saw his passion for cricket and thus registered him in a cricket academy.
Surya played club cricket from a club in Mumbai by the name – Parsi Gymkhana Cricket Club. He also played for the Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited, Dadar Union Club, etc. in Mumbai. Soon his performance got better and better and then he was selected for Ranji Trophy.
Later he was one of the senior players of the team and was also the captain of the Mumbai Ranji Trophy team in the 2014-15 season. However, he was removed from the captaincy in the 2018-19 season.
In 2012 Surya was selected by the Mumbai Indians franchise in the IPL. He just played 1 match in the 2012 edition and was out for a duck.
In the 2014 edition of the Indian Premier League he was acquired by the Kolkata Knight Riders for INR 70 lacs. At that time Gautam Gambhir was the captain of the Kolkata Knight Riders. The Kolkata franchise wanted Surya to play as a finisher for their team and thus he was sent to no.7, no.8 position. He scored 164 runs in the 16 matches at an average of 32.80.
He made his name in 2015 when he scored a match-winning 46 runs in 20 balls against his former team Mumbai Indians at the Eden Gardens. He is known for his fearless shots which seem impossible. His intent towards the ball and playing it behind the keeper or playing it in the opposite V is just unimaginable.
In the 2018 IPL auction, he was again acquired by the Mumbai Indians for INR 3.2cr. It was the best buy for the Mumbai Indians as Sky became a beast in terms of scoring runs. Initially, he was batting at the no.3, no.4 position but after some good knocks, the franchise asked him to open the innings along with Evin Lewis. He consistently scored from then onwards and became one of the best T20 batsmen. He was one of the 3 retentions of the Mumbai Indians squad along with captain Rohit Sharma and Jasprit Bumrah. Later he was also made the vice-captain of the franchise.
After consistently performing like a beast in domestic and IPL, scoring more than 450+ runs in the IPL for continuous 3 years, finally, the day arrived when Surya got his maiden call-up for the Indian team. He was named in the Indian T20I squad against England in March 2021. He made his debut for the team on 14th March 2021 along with his Mumbai Indians teammate Ishan Kishan. However, he didn’t get a chance to bat as Ishan scored a mind-blowing half-century.
He was dropped for the next couple of matches and then in the fourth T20I in the Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad on 18th March he got the chance for batting in the Indian jersey. The 1st ball he played, was out of the ground for a maximum. He played an unbelievable shot behind the wicketkeeper’s head on Jofra Archer’s ball. That shot was a warning for the bowlers that “I’m here to stay.” He scored a fiery 56 of 31 balls including 6 fours and 3 sixes. The Indian team won the match by 8 runs and Suryakumar Yadav was given the Man of the Match Award.
In June 2021 he was named in the Indian ODI squad for the first time for a series against Sri Lanka. He made his debut on 18 July 2021 in the R.Premadasa Stadium, Colombo. While batting at no.4 position Sky scored 31 runs from 20 balls including 5 boundaries and finished the match while not out.
Later on, he was added to the 2021 and then 2022 men’s ICC T20 World Cup. He scored his maiden T20I ton in July 2022 against England at Trent Bridge in Nottingham scoring 117 of just 55 balls.
He was added to the test squad for England as well as the New Zealand series but made his Test debut for India early this year on Feb 9, 2023, against Australia in the Border Gavaskar Trophy. He scored 8 runs on his debut and was dropped from the second match.
